Flanders Fields Memorial Garden (GB)
The garden, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War, is located at Wellington Barracks, alongside the Guards Chapel, which is adjacent to Buckingham Palace. The ‘Flanders Fields 1914-2014’ Memorial Garden has been designed by internationally acclaimed landscape architect Piet Blanckaert, from Bruges, Belgium.
Deltalight has had the pleasure of collaborating with Piet on the lighting design for the garden. The lighting washes a low wall with the 9 regiment plaques in stone and a pole mounted flood light is gracing the circular bed in the middle of the garden which is containing soil from the battlefield. The crowns of leaves of some young trees have been softly lit from below, which also will look striking in the winter when the branches are bare.
Every aspect has been carefully considered so that it becomes a very special memorial to all those who lost their lives or were injured in the battlefields of Flanders. The Memorial Garden opening ceremony has taken place on Thursday 6th November 2014, attended by members of the Royal Families of both Belgium and Great Britain.
