This temporary exhibition presents new paintings by Mary Weatherford, inspired by Titian's 1570-76 masterpiece "The Punishment of Marsyas," now housed in the Archbishop's Museum in Kroměříž in the Czech Republic. The paintings by Mary Weatherford make up the exhibition The Flaying of Marsyas, hosted at the Palazzo Grimani Museum from April 20 to Nov. 27, 2022, in conjunction with the 59th Art Biennale.

Inspired by Titian's palette and paying homage to the characteristic light of Venice, Weatherford, in creating the works in the exhibition, used Flashe paint and neon lights to restore the effect of ancient canvas.

The artist responds to Titian's composition by translating the violent character of his mythological theme into a more spontaneous form, also alluding to fate, haughtiness, and the relationship between the human and the divine.

The exhibition, set up on the second floor of the museum, was designed in collaboration with renowned architect and designer Kulapat Yantrasast. The Flaying of Marsyas and Archinto are produced by Gagosian and organised in collaboration with the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate and the Venetian Heritage Foundation.
