Nikolskoe (DE)
The Blockhaus Nikolskoe was commissioned by Frederick William III of Prussia and built in 1819 at the occasion of the visit of his daughter Charlotte and her husband Nicholas I of Russia, the later Emperor. Together with the neighbouring St. Peter & Paul's Church, the former Freischule and the cemetery on the Pfaueninsel, the Blockhouse forms an architectural ensemble which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin".
Berlin-based architectural practice Playze was asked to develop a new identity for the restaurant's guest spaces. The main take was to get rid of the historicising elements and free up the massive wooden structure, the logs. Beside the minimal furniture, playing with the circularity in detail, the light plays the main role in this subtle transformation. Different atmospheres are made possible by a flexible distribution of diffused and focussed light spots throughout these historic spaces.
